What is sleep?

What are the different types of Sleep?

All sleep is not the same. During sleep, multifaceted alterations occur in the brain. There are two main types of sleep: rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-rapid eye movement (non-REM) sleep, which has four stages. During non- REM sleep, sleep progresses from stage 1 (the lightest level, when the sleeper can be awakened easily) to stage 4 (the deepest level).

Adults spend around 80% of their sleep time in Non-REM sleep.  When we sleep through the night, we go through four stages of non-REM sleep, and then briefly experience REM sleep. This cycle repeats itself every 90 minutes or about 5-6 times each night.

Adults need about 7-9 hours of sleep every day. If we are not able to get enough sleep and complete these cycles, our body and mind both suffer. Prolonged poor sleep cycles result in irritability, lack of concentration, drop in overall health, fatigue, weight loss or weight gain and many a times, more serious ailments too.
